Serious Penalties Follow A Felony Charge

New Jersey categorizes indictable crimes into four classifications, first through fourth, based on the severity of the offense. Potential penalties are as follows:

  • First degree offenses: First degree crimes are the most serious and carry the harshest penalties. If convicted, you could face a prison sentence of 20 years, with certain crimes being punishable by 30 years or life in prison. You could also face fines of up to $200,000.
  • Second degree offenses: Prison sentences range from five to 10 years. The court can also impose fines of up to $150,000.
  • Third degree offenses: The court can impose prison sentences of three to five years and require you to pay fines of up to $15,000.
  • Fourth degree offenses: If convicted, you could face up to 18 months in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
