A charge of driving while intoxicated can incur severe penalties, such as jail time, fines, and a suspended driver's license. A drunk driving charge can become even more serious when it results in injuries, as the following accident in New Jersey illustrates.

A 39-year-old Newark man accused of being the drunk driver who caused an accident involving three cars has been arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. A spokesperson for the state police said the man's white Acura had been impounded.

The crash occurred on Interstate 80 shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 17, according to state police. The man was driving on state Route 202 and attempted to merge onto eastbound I-80. He reportedly struck two cars, which forced them into the median. The crash involved seven people, including two children.

Three people received treatment at a nearby hospital for minor injuries, and four other people refused treatment.

At this point it's not known if police conducted any kind of sobriety test on the driver to determine if he actually was drunk. Persons who have been charged with DUI in New Jersey will need detailed knowledge about DUI procedures, including sobriety testing methods. These cases often involve a review of the police paperwork and scientific evaluation of the evidence. This could have been a simple case of driver error.
