DUI results in three-vehicle car crash

Drunk driving is a serious offense in the state of New Jersey. Individuals arrested and convicted of a DUI charge in New Jersey can face stiff fines and penalties. For example, penalties for a first DUI offense can include jail time, fines and fees, driver's license suspension or revocation and mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device. In New Jersey, drivers with a BAC level of .08 or higher are considered to be driving under the influence.

A New Jersey man from Andover Township was recently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following a serious crash last Saturday. According to the Newton Police Department, local authorities were called to Sparta Avenue near Merriam to investigate a three-vehicle car accident. An investigation showed that the car accident was caused by a 50-year-old man driving a 2005 Ford Escort west on Sparta Avenue.

According to authorities, the man struck a 2008 Toyota Scion from behind, which subsequently pushed the Scion into the rear of a 2012 Jeep. The investigating officers reported that no one was hurt in the car crash. Police, however, did charge the 50-year-old Andover man with careless driving and operating a motor vehicle under the influence. After charging him, the man was released pending a court appearance.

While all DUI charges should be taken seriously, a DUI that involves damage to property or human life is even more serious. In addition to enhanced charges, an individual convicted of a DUI in which property or another human being is injured could be held responsible for civil damages, as well. This can include paying for damaged property, compensating the victims for their medical expenses and lost wages, and much more.
