Violent crimes, particularly those involving sex and young children, are prosecuted especially aggressively by state and federal prosecutors. Individuals convicted of violent sex crimes, like rape and sexual assault, face a lifetime of serious consequences. Penalties for sex crimes include jail, fines, probation and a lifetime of registration with sex offender registries. In the case of the latter, the effects can be life-altering.

A 31-year-old man from Somerville, New Jersey, was recently indicted on sexual assault charges involving a young girl. According to court documents, the alleged crime occurred when the girl was between the ages of 6- and 13-years-old. The alleged sexual assault was reported to the Somerville Police and the Division of Child Protection and Permanency following a more recent sexual assault that occurred earlier in the year.

The young girl, who is now 13, told law enforcement officials that on June 3, 2013, she was sleeping in her bedroom when she woke up to find the man touching her. The earlier sexual assaults allegedly took place between September 2005 and September 2007 when the girl was between the ages of 6- and 8-years-old. The man is currently charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The effects of a criminal conviction for a sex crime, particularly those involving young children, can be life-altering. In addition to a prison sentence, convicted sex offenders face a lifetime of registration that can result in damage to a person’s personal and professional life. Fortunately, despite the media’s attempt to paint everyone accused of sex crimes as guilty, in a court of law individuals are innocent until proven guilty.
