Law enforcement authorities in Bergen County, New Jersey, have reported that a New Jersey man is facing a sexual assault charge involving an unnamed and underage girl. The 43-year-old Elmwood Park man is accused of engaging in unknown sexual activities with a minor on more than one occasion. He is currently in the custody of Bergen County, according to authorities. The man’s bail bond has been set at $250,000.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the man is charged with multiple sex crimes involving a minor including aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and sexual assault. Police and prosecutors have not said if the man accused has a prior criminal record. If convicted, the man would face serious, long-term consequences, including the life-long stigma of being a registered sex offender.
The sexual assault of a minor is considered one of the most heinous crimes a person can commit. Because of this, prosecutors pursue individuals’ accused of such sex crimes with particular intensity. Unfortunately, while such intensity may appeal to parents and local media, it can also result in bad police work and a presumptive conviction.
