The only way to know that you are hiring the best lawyer for your case is by doing the research. Make sure that you meet personally with the lawyer who will be working with you so that they understand your personal circumstances. If you do not live in the area, or are very busy at work, arrange for a zoom consultation so that you can have a conversation with the attorney who will be handling your case. It is important for any potential lawyer to understand and explain to you the exact issues with your case and how they can help.

Make sure your lawyer has a lot of trial experience. Only a lawyer who is very experienced in trying criminal cases can truly design the best possible defense. Only a trial lawyer understands what facts are important to juries, if the case must go to trial and what facts and legal issues are important to prosecutors and judges, if the case should be resolved with a plea bargain. There is no substitute for an experienced trial lawyer and in New Jersey, the New Jersey Supreme Court recognizes a very small percentage of lawyers as Certified Criminal Trial attorneys. This designation is an indication that an attorney has reached a particularly high level of expertise in the area.

Don’t hire a lawyer just because they sent you a letter in the mail that scared you. Don’t hire a lawyer just because they are pressuring or rushing you.

Your lawyer should be familiar with the judges and prosecutors in the court where your case will be heard so that they know what to expect before walking into the courthouse.

Your lawyer should recognize the issues that are involved with your case and your particular charges. An experienced lawyer will know how to identify issues and explain issues that are commonly relevant for different charges. Not all criminal cases are the same. For example, drug charges are completely different from possession of child pornography charges. They both require time and attention, but the issues and the consequences are very different.

Take your time and make sure you hire a lawyer who will fight for you and be a fierce advocate, but also one that will be honest with you. Your freedom and reputation are worth it.
