Being charged with a crime is can be a very scary experience. Depending on the charges, an individual charged with a crime faces the possibility of years in prison and large monetary fines. Due to the magnitude of these potential penalties, it is important that anyone facing criminal charges enlist the aid of a qualified defense attorney. A good criminal defense is the only difference that exists between defendants that go to jail and defendants that go free.

According to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, a New Jersey man was sentenced after being brought up on multiple weapons charges. The 31-year old Linden, New Jersey man was arrested after he allegedly sold a revolver and two assault rifles to an undercover law enforcement agent. The undercover agent was reportedly part of a large weapons trafficking investigation that was being conducted by the New Jersey State Police Department.

According to prosecutors, the defendant pled guilty to second-degree conspiracy, unlawful possession of a handgun, unlawful possession of an assault rifle and third degree unlawful possession of a weapon. The man also faced a second-degree charge for conspiring to distribute a dangerous controlled substance. He pled guilty to that charge as well. The drugs he allegedly had in his possession were methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), known colloquially as "bath salts."

For his guilty plea, the man received a prison sentence of five years. However, he will be eligible for parole in three years. Sometimes, the best thing a defendant can do is to negotiate a plea agreement with the prosecuting attorney. This is one of the reasons a criminal defense attorney is so vital in a criminal case. An experienced criminal defense attorney can assess the viability of a case and work to achieve the best possible outcome for the defendant.
