A drunk driving charge should never be discounted. Individuals convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can face serious penalties including license suspension, fines and jail time. If someone is facing a DWI charge, however, it is important that they contact an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney can help a defendant try to negotiate a better outcome, or possibly even get the charge drop entirely.
According to new reports, New Jersey law enforcement announced that it arrested a Washington man for alleged driving drunk and for causing serious damage. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey the 28-year-old was stopped around 5 a.m. recently after police noticed the car the man was driving in had two flat tires and extensive damage to its body, including a crushed rooftop.
After stopping the man, police soon learned that the 28-year-old motorist had been involved in a number of accidents in Fort Lee just prior to being pulled over. According to a spokesperson for the Port Authority, the man ran over a light pole, a street sign, a floodlight, several bushes and a parking meter before being stopped on the George Washington Bridge. He is facing a DWI charge and many motor vehicle violations.
While it may seem like an uphill battle, a drunk driving charge does not have to be the end of the world. If a suspect is properly represented it is possible to enter into negotiations with prosecutors for a reduced jail term, smaller fines or lesser charges. They key in any drunk driving case, however, is to get proper representation right away so that every possible defense can be considered and developed in good time.
