When individuals are charged with a crime, they must be proven guilty or plead guilty before they can be convicted. In other words, there must be sufficient credible evidence that meets a high burden of proof before a conviction for an offense such as assault can be obtained. Those individuals who have been accused should be able to make decisions regarding their situations in order for them to determine what legal routes may be best given the circumstances.
Two individuals in New Jersey may be hoping to find the best course to follow after they were taken into custody. It was reported that a 25-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were suspected of abusing the man’s 2-year-old child. Suspicion reportedly arose after the child’s mother took the child to the hospital after apparently noticing injuries.
The child reportedly suffered bleeding on the eye and brain. As a result, the man and the woman — who apparently lived together — were charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment. The man’s bail was set at $50,000, and the woman’s was set at $40,000.
Aggravated assault and child endangerment charges could result in serious consequences if one or both individuals are convicted of the charges. Therefore, they each may wish to determine how they would like to address their specific circumstances and what legal options may be best for each as individuals. Information on New Jersey criminal processes relating to the allegations that have been made against them may help them better prepare for their upcoming court proceedings.
